Software Sizing, Estimation, and Risk Management: When Performance is Measured Performance Improves is a practical, hands-on discussion of the software estimation, planning, and control process. This includes critical factors that impact estimates, methods for selecting and applying appropriate measures to projects, proper software sizing, and processes to identify and manage risk. The authors use their expertise in sizing, estimation, process engineering, and risk management to clearly demonstrate problems that make many estimates crumble and solutions that provide successful project plans. The book offers insight not available anywhere else, enabling readers to recognize and avoid downstream impacts resulting from poor estimates.

\"\'The Art of Project Management\' covers it all--from practical methods for making sure work gets done right and on time, to the mindset that can make you a great leader motivating your team to do their best. Reading this was like reading the blueprint for how the best projects are managed at Microsoft... I wish we always put these lessons into action!\" --Joe Belfiore, General Manager, E-home Division, Microsoft Corporation \"Berkun has written a fast paced, jargon-free and witty guide to what he wisely refers to as the \'art\' of project management. It\'s a great introduction to the discipline. Seasoned and new managers will benefit from Berkun\'s perspectives.\" --Joe Mirza, Director, CNET Networks (Cnet.com) \"Most books with the words \'project management\' in the title are dry tomes. If that\'s what you are expecting to hear from Berkun\'s book, you will be pleasantly surprised. Sure, it\'s about project management. But it\'s also about creativity, situational problem-solving, and leadership. If you\'re a team member, project manager, or even a non-technical stakeholder, Scott offers dozens of practical tools and techniques you can use, and questions you can ask, to ensure your projects succeed.\" --Bill Bliss, Senior VP of product and customer experience, expedia.com In The Art of Project Management, you\'ll learn from a veteran manager of software and web development how to plan, manage, and lead projects. This personal account of hard lessons learned over a decade of work in the industry distills complex concepts and challenges into practical nuggets of useful advice. Inspiring, funny, honest, and compelling, this is the book you and your team need to have within arms reach. It will serve you well with your current work, and on future projects to come. Topics include:
* How to make things happen
* Making good decisions
* Specifications and requirements
* Ideas and what to do with them
* How not to annoy people
* Leadership and trust
* The truth about making dates
* What to do when things go wrong
From the Inside Flap
\"...Its strengths are its basis in experience; the inclusion of many illustrative stories; and the thoughtful sections on specs, making good decisions, and politics. ...I think it would be an excellent resource for someone going into project management or trying to make sense of project management.\"
- Kent Beck, Three Rivers Consulting, Inc. \"The Art of Project Management covers it all - from practical methods for making sure work gets done right and on time, to the mindset that can make you a great leader motivating your team to do their best. Reading this was like reading the blueprint for how the best projects are managed at Microsoft. I wish we always put these lessons into action!\" - Joe Belfiore, General Manager, E-home Division, Microsoft Corporation \"Berkun has written a fast paced, jargon-free and witty guide to what he wisely refers to as the \'art\' of project management. If you\'re a team member, project manager, or even a non-technical stakeholder, Scott offers dozens of practical tools and techniques you can use, and questions you can ask, to ensure your projects succeed.\" - Bill Bliss, Senior VP of product and customer experience, expedia.com \"Scott\'s manifesto on project management is a great balance of practical advice and inspiration, based on keen observations and experiences earned while in the trenches. It\'s well-researched, very readable, and humorous to boot.\" - Paolo Malabuyo, Lead Program Manager, Xbox, Microsoft Corporation \" This book is useful to anyone involved in ongoing projects, regardless of whether they have an official leadership role. I\'m a designer, not a project manager, and I found more practical information on how to get work done in a software company than any other book I\'ve read.\" - Chad Thornton, Interaction Designer, Google A successful software application is a mixture of programming, designing, scheduling, marketing, testing, some black magic, and a lot of luck. Engineers see it as a technical problem; designers see it as a usability problem; marketers see it as a specifications problem; but nobody sees it as 100% their problem. This book is written for the people who take on the burden of making the whole problem their problem\" - Steve Capps, CEO of onedoto.com and Former Apple fellow \"How I managed so long without this book baffles the mind.\" - Richard Stoakley, Group Program Manager, Microsoft Corporation \"As a software engineer, the observations in \'The Art of Project Management\' resonated deeply with my own experiences. Scott\'s book gave me a new appreciation for the difficulty and risks, and the tremendous rewards of good project management. This book provides the knowledge and the incentive to become a better project contributor whether you are managing or being managed. Any stakeholder in a software project will benefit from reading this book.\" - Martin Frankel, Senior Software Engineer, TiVo Inc.\" Berkun provides valuable insight into how to accomplish projects without subscribing to a specific software engineering strategy. His discussions are supported with examples from projects he personally managed and include numerous citations from other works on philosophy, organizational behavior, and project management. This book should be required reading for anyone involved with development, from a single programmer in a small company to a vice-president of a large corporation. -Samuel Greenfield, Manager of System Development, Sports Illustrated Magazine \"Of all the many books on project management, \"The art of project management\" is by far the most easy to read and entertaining. Scott Berkun\'s insights, knowledge and sense of humor delivers an exceptional book that no project manager can do without.\" - Michael Viola, Senior Consultant, IBM

How To Be An Even Better Manager: A Complete A-Z of Proven Techniques and Essential Skills
This book is for those who want to develop their managerial skills and competences. It covers all the key skills that managers use, and refers to the main aspects of managing people, activities and themselves with which they need to be familiar.
You can dip into this book at any point – each chapter is selfcontained. But it would be useful to read Chapter 1 first. This defines the overall concept of management and the areas in which managers need to be competent, thus providing a framework for the succeeding chapters. These cover the following areas:
[list][*]Managing people: appraising, coaching, communicating, conflict management, delegating, developing people, handling difficult people and negative behaviour, getting job engagement, leadership, managing under-performers, managing your boss, motivating people, objective setting, performance management, power and politics, providing feedback, selection interviewing
and team management.
[*]Managing activities and processes: change management, controlling, co-ordinating, crisis management, how things go wrong xv and how to put them right, meetings, organizing, planning, prioritizing, project management and strategic management.
[*]Managing and developing yourself (enhancing personal skills): achieving results, assertiveness, clear thinking, communicating, being creative, being decisive, developing emotional intelligence, effective speaking, getting on, how to be interviewed, influencing, managing stress, negotiating, problem-solving and decision-making, report writing, self-development, and time management.
In 19 of the chapters, actions are summarized in a useful ‘Ten things to do’ format. These are listed in the index under the entry ‘ten ways of’

The Triumph of Contrarian Investing : Crowds, Manias, and Beating the Market by Going Against the Grain
Ned Davis, one of today’s biggest names in investing, reveals:
* How to ignore the temptation to “join the crowd” and uncover tremendous opportunities
* Consistent signs that a stock’s price has been driven too high or too low
* Strategies for protecting contrarian portfolios when–as sometimes happens–the crowd is right
From the Back Cover
How Going Against the Crowd Can Dramatically Improve Your Investment Performance–With Charts and Numbers to Back It Up!
Praise for The Triumph of Contrarian Investing:
“Ned Davis adds to our understanding of contrarian behavior by taking his usual highly-disciplined quantitative approach to measuring investment behavior. This book will enable you to remain objective and effective no matter how intense the frenzy, excitement, or boredom becomes.”
–Byron R. Wien, Managing Director and Senior Investment Strategist, Morgan Stanley
“Ned Davis is one of the greatest market historians of the past century.”
–Louis Rukeyser, Host, “Louis Rukeyser’s Wall Street” (June 27, 2003)
“Ned Davis lays out the hard facts that will help you keep your head when others are losing theirs.”
–Michael Sivy, Editor at Large, Money
“It took Ned Davis to sculpt a potent array of contrary opinion indicators which, taken together, are fully capable of reducing investment risks while significantly increasing investment returns.”
–Paul Macrae Montgomery, Analyst, Legg Mason Wood Walker, Inc.
“The Triumph of Contrarian Investing weaves together history, behavioral theory, market lore and time-tested sentiment indicators to help the investor act rationally when the crowd is either paralyzed with fear or overcome by greed and optimism.”
–Jonathan R. Laing, Senior Editor, Barron’s
“Most people fancy themselves contrarians. But there’s a lot more to being contrary than doing the opposite of what everyone else is doing. The Triumph of Contrarian Investing is a practical guide to going against the herd on the Street without getting trampled.”
–John Waggoner, Columnist, USA Today
“All the evidence in this book … shows the crowd is almost always wrong at extremes …”
–Ned Davis, From Chapter 1
It is one thing to say that the crowd is always wrong at extremes. It is quite another to provide convincing proof.
In The Triumph of Contrarian Investing, Ned Davis–one of today’s most respected and influential market analysts–delivers both qualitative and quantitative proof that, when emotion is at its highest, the investing herd is almost certain to be running in the wrong direction. He then provides indicators to help you determine when crowd psychology is at an extreme, and outlines a disciplined approach for remaining fully and profitably invested in strong market environments while foreseeing and avoiding major market disasters.
This first-of-its-kind contrarian investor’s rulebook will show you how to:
* Understand the powerful forces of crowd psychology and its historic and predictable impact on financial markets
* Quantify and analyze crowd sentiment to identify when that sentiment has gone too far–and is poised to reverse
* Ignore popular perceptions and your own emotions to sell during periods of extreme optimism and buy during extreme pessimism
Following the innovative and nontraditional approach that has always been a hallmark of Ned Davis Research, The Triumph of Contrarian Investing combines both qualitative and quantitative indicators into a successful contrarian strategy. Hundreds of charts and graphs reveal how and, more importantly, when contrarian investing principles have proven in past markets to be most successful. Only here will you learn:
* At what levels the market’s price/earnings ratio, long considered a measure of valuation, can actually be an uncanny yardstick of investor expectations
* At what precise point the percentage of household financial assets held in stocks has reliably signaled market peaks and troughs
* How the inflow of money into various financial instruments can be confidently used to indicate imminent market turnarounds
In terms of human nature, nothing is more difficult than going against the crowd. In terms of investment performance, on the other hand, nothing is more profitable. Let Ned Davis’s The Triumph of Contrarian Investing provide you with analysis and indicators proven to spotlight those points at which investor optimism or pessimism is at its strongest, then show you how to go against the grain–and profit–in virtually every instance.

Management Stripped Bare: What They Don’t Teach You at Business School
And yet, there is no training or guidance on how to deal with the problems that management face. It is simply assumed that managers know instinctively how to run good meetings, how to write well, how to deal with the thousand tricky situations that crop up in the managerial year.
In the end, managers serve an informal apprenticeship where
they learn from the successes and failures of all those around them.
After some years, they land up with a model of how they think their world works and how they can survive in it.
The good news is that those patterns of success and failure are common to all managers in all industries. There is no single rule of success. Instead, there are a thousand small things that a manager can do right or wrong every day.
This book draws on 20 years’ experience of serving different
industries across the world to map out what consistently does, and does not, work in the situations managers face. It is not a grand theory of management. It is a practical guide to survival in the managerial world.

The Demise of the Dollar… and Why It’s Great For Your Investments
That’s the bad news. The good news is that hidden investment opportunities are waiting behind the weakening dollar. In The Demise of the Dollar… and Why It’s Great for Your Investments Wiggin offers advice to readers looking to capitalize on this reality; specifically, he encourages investing in precious metals, tangible resources, and some select foreign markets.
Along with investment advice, Wiggin provides a brief history of government and consumer spending habits and how they have changed over the past 200 years. In clear language, he states the reasons for the dollar’s decline, and provides explanations of the forces behind inflation, modern corporate accounting and adjustment schemes, the parallels between corporate failures and government policies, the implications of the national debt and deficit spending, and the distinctions between productive and consumptive debt. He also discusses how foreign countries, particularly China, are ultimately in control of the U.S.’s economic fate due to the staggering amount of credit they have extended.
Wiggin is highly critical of Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan’s policies, particularly the massive shift from production to credit that he has espoused, and calls into question his efforts to manage the dollar’s value. Of course, Greenspan was not working alone–every president since Ronald Reagan has embraced his views. Written for lay readers, The Demise of the Dollar offers a practical analysis of what the “twilight of the Great Dollar Standard Era” may bring.

Just One Thing: Twelve of the World’s Best Investors Reveal the One Strategy You Can’t Overlook
The lessons which Mauldin has compiled in this thin, readable volume range widely. Some readers may enjoy the folksier tone of hedge fund manager Andy Kessler’s piece, which analogizes investing to a hike up New England’s Mt. Washington, on a foggy day. Other may prefer the approach of bond investor Gary Shilling, who argues for finding and developing a consistent and long-term narrative (or “story” about a market) around which to build investment picks. Yet others may find it most comforting to go with financial analyst Rob Arnott, who runs a multi-billion dollar fund for Pimco and who anchors his market analysis in deep skepticism and extensive quantitative analytics.
As with the larger market, Mauldin’s group of 12 expert investors brings its own mix of philosophies, tactics, and personalities to investing, and in his notes between each selection, Mauldin is careful not to tip his hand favoring one or the other. Instead, quality for Mauldin rests in the survey of the masters, and the restriction of those masters to “just one thing” each. Mauldin should know: as the author of Bull’s Eye Investing: Targeting Real Returns in a Smoke and Mirrors Market, as well as a weekly investment newsletter with readership over one million, he has seen his share of both charlatans and geniuses.
Mauldin’s work can be taken a couple of different ways. For younger investors, it may provide a valuable survey of different investment philosophies, and the opportunity to learn just enough to undertake further research elsewhere. For more experienced investors it can provide the possibility of a new idea gleaned here or there, some new concept that may have been overlooked previously. Either way, both audiences will benefit from the diversity of perspectives included in this book. In an increasingly chaotic and noise-filled world, trusted sources which give such sure-handed perspective on the business of investments deserve high praise.

2. The “Not-So-Simple” (But Really Utterly So) Rules of Trading (Dennis Gartman).

Empire of Debt: The Rise of an Epic Financial Crisis
Bonner and Wiggin enumerate a long list of chronic ailments that imperil the American financial system–a massive trade deficit, soaring personal and government debt, a housing bubble, runaway military expenditures. These problems “hardly disturb the sleep of the imperial race,” the authors write. “[But] all empires must pass away.” Bonner and Wiggin argue that American imperial delusions are similar to the fantasies that fueled the dot-com market mania. They recommend readers buy gold as insurance in the event of a financial crisis. Empire of Debt flounders when discussing how America indebted itself; the authors blame the Federal Reserve Board’s low interest rates but gloss over the fact that rates were slashed because the U.S. teetered on the brink of deflation in 2002 and 2003 (a topic they give more attention to in Financial Reckoning Day).
As hardcore free-marketeers, Bonner and Wiggin also seem to long for the pre-welfare days of the 1920s but forget how that period’s policies led to the Great Depression. That said, Empire of Debt contains many revelations that will open eyes.

China, Inc.: How the Rise of the Next Superpower Challenges America and the World
Calling China’s huge population “arguably the greatest natural resource on the planet,” Fishman details how hundreds of millions of peasants have migrated from rural to urban areas to find manufacturing jobs, providing an unlimited, low-wage workforce to power China’s economy. In the process, this shift has changed both Chinese culture and the global business climate in significant ways. Simply put, American companies can’t compete with wages as low as 25 cents an hour and lack of regulation and oversight, so are forced to move their operations to China or completely change the focus of their business. And it’s not just a problem for the U.S.–even Mexico is outsourcing to China. Though it remains to be seen whether this will truly be the “Chinese Century” as Fishman asserts, China, Inc. is a brisk and informative look at why so many American corporations, and American jobs, are heading to China. –Shawn Carkonen

Inside the House of Money: Top Hedge Fund Traders on Profiting in the Global Markets
In the book, Leitner offers this advice to managers: “If you read about an oil discovery, start thinking about how to develop it into a trade. The idea is to do as much research as you can just reading and thinking about anything in the world before reaching out to your network.”….The key to thriving in global macro? Plenty of smarts for starters. And “humility and flexibility,” Drobny says. “You have to be flexible enough to cut your positions when what you firmly believe in is not working for you.” This year, global macro managers did great in the January-April period, and didn’t do great in May and June, when equities and emerging markets took a big hit…..even for sophisticated players in the global-macro game, it sometimes pays to just sit on the sidelines.” - (Barron’s)
“It’s a fantastic book, both in content and execution.” - (Bloomberg News)
“Steven Drobny has been able to do something that few others have, especially in the media: He got hedge fund managers to share their trade secrets.” - (InstitutionalInvestor.com)
“[Steven Drobny] uses this access to present a series of fascinating interviews with more than a dozen managers representing a broad spectrum of investment thinking.” - (Financial Times)
“a good start in understanding what the new global micro manager is all about.” - (Lipper HedgeWorld)
“Couldn’t come at a more appropriate time…sheds more light than ever on the minds behind the largest global macro funds…reveals the intricacies of thinking like a hedge fund manager.” - (Forbes)
“Drobny has a Rolodex that’s the Wall Street equivalent of Wilt Chamberlain’s little black book…he has used its power to help craft the absorbing Inside the House of Money. Think Market Wizards – only full of guys who aren’t either dead or irrelevant.” - (Trader Monthly)
“For the investor, the trading strategies described in the interviews are chock-a-block with detail, and can serve as a starting point toward navigating hedge funds… more interesting are the stories of how these traders got where they are today… goes a long way toward enlightening those who aspire to enter.” - (Financial World Magazine)
“…eye opener…” - (NYSSA)
“…must read…” - (Futures Magazine)
“…engaging…” - (Active Trader)
“written an intelligent analysis of the current hedge fund climate” (Pensions World, September 2006)
“Corporate finance managers are taking the message of the book on board.” (CFO Europe, September 2006)
Inside the House of Money lifts the veil on the typically opaque world of hedge funds, offering a rare glimpse at how today’s highest paid money managers approach their craft. Author Steven Drobny demystifies how these star traders make billions for well-heeled investors, revealing their theories, strategies and approaches to markets. Drobny, cofounder of Drobny Global Advisors, an international macroeconomic research and advisory firm, has tapped into his network and beyond in order assemble this collection of thirteen interviews with the industry’s best minds.
Along the way, you’ll get an inside look at firsthand trading experiences through some of the major world financial crises of the last few decades. Whether Russian bonds, Pakistani stocks, Southeast Asian currencies or stakes in African brewing companies, no market or instrument is out of bounds for these elite global macro hedge fund managers. Highly accessible and filled with in-depth expert opinion, Inside the House of Money is a must-read for financial professionals and anyone else interested in understanding the complexities at stake in world financial markets.

Entries & Exits : Visits to 16 Trading Rooms
The companion Study Guide is filled with striking insights and practical advice allowing you to test your knowledge and reinforce the principles outlined in Entries & Exits.
From the Inside Flap
You are about to visit the trading rooms of sixteen men and women. These traders live in different countries, follow different markets, and use different methods, but all share several traits—most importantly, their dedication to trading. They are utterly serious about their work, while most of the amateurs who supply the bulk of their winnings are chasing the excitement of an adrenaline rush.
Why would a person who is trading for a living talk about his or her method instead of grinding out profits in silence? Winners know full well that success in trading does not depend on knowing “the secret.” There is no secret—only hard work, focus, attention to detail, being careful and long-term oriented with money, and having a bit of flair.
Trading is a vast field, and like a doctor, you must specialize. Many beginners spread themselves painfully thin by investing in and day-trading stocks, futures, and options. Each trader in this book concentrates on an area that appeals to him or her, be it buying breakouts, writing puts, or trolling for dull stocks ready to explode from consolidation zones.
People become successful when they focus on what they love to do. In reading this book, you will probably come across a trading vehicle you like or a concept that appeals to you. Once you find it, stay with it and mine that area for its rich deposits.
There are massive differences between traders at various stages of development. Beginners look for tips, while intermediate traders keep asking about indicator settings. Experienced traders love to watch others make decisions and explain them. Traders in this book will share a wealth of information with you; what you take home is entirely up to you.
Trading can give you money, which can buy many good things—freedom from a boss, the ability to travel wherever and whenever you like, and much more. Still, when the chips are down, it is not money that determines the quality of your life. Your goal in trading should be to become the best professional you can be.
We owe a debt of gratitude to the sixteen traders who opened their trading rooms—helping all of us become better traders and serving as examples of kindness, generosity, and drive. They show us that there is more to life than money, even in a trader’s life. This book is designed to help you break out of isolation, learn from others, pick up ideas that suit your style, and return to your trading room a

Talent Force: A New Manifesto for the Human Side of Business
Reviews:
Who’s up for crashing retirement parties? With so many baby boomers bidding adieu, there’s no shortage of workplace send-offs.
And it doesn’t matter who’s saying goodbye. So what if we’ve never worked with, talked to, or heard of Larry from accounting or Betty from payroll.
It’s not like we’re pulling a Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson and crashing weddings as supposed friends of the bride or groom.
Everyone’s family here at work.
Showing up for a stranger’s party is proof positive that we’re team players who care. And that, my friend, is the kind of reputation that gets you hand-picked for high-profile special projects where the fun never ends and the pay, perks and expense accounts have no limits.
Not all send-offs are created equal, so let’s pick our spots. For something more than a Costco slab cake and lukewarm Pepsi served in an otherwise empty room, watch for retiring management types.
Expect a spread that rivals what the executives grazed on during a career of endless meetings.
Equally excellent are standing-room-only retirement parties for the happy, hard-working little people who are known by all and loved by many.
Of course, we’re crashing parties to do more than scarf back snacks and escape our desks for a half hour of sanctioned social time.
Our mission? Hobnob with senior execs who’ve cleared 20 minutes on their calendars, wandered out of their inner sanctums and cut the tether to their Crackberries.
If we don’t get face time with those who have the power to promote us, let’s hijack them later in hallways and rave about their witty and heartfelt speeches, the ones that were written in mere minutes by their frantic personal assistants who flew into HR and yanked the personnel files of the dearly departing.
Yes, retirement parties can be a wonderful networking opportunity if you’re an ambitious Gen Xer or Nexter looking to move up in the world.
It’s less than wonderful if you’re running the show. Not only is so much experience and expertise walking out the door — other employers are aggressively courting and poaching whoever’s left standing and your best and brightest have long since lost any sense of loyalty.
Smart organizations are going on the offensive and fundamentally rethinking the way talent is evaluated, recruited, trained, retained and promoted, claim authors Hank Stringer and Rusty Rueff.
“The more you can put the right person with the right attitude, experience and skills in the right place at the right time, the better off your business will be,” say the authors.
“Every organization that wants to remain competitive must create a plan to acquire the right talent and ensure that talent is available for the work that needs to be done today and in the future.”
Stringer and Rueff recommend investing heavily in websites, podcasts, VCasts and blogs to promote your talent brand and build your talent pool
Complementing your high-tech investments is old-fashioned, high-touch relationship recruiting. Hiring a Chief Talent Officer and a small army of recruiters will prove to be a very wise investment.
And thanks to the wonders of technology, your recruiters should be pushing less paper and talking with more people.
“Only a person, a skilled relationship recruiter, can look into people’s eyes, shake their hands, ask them questions and formulate a rich, nuanced, social understanding of each unique answer.”
Talent Force will be a wake-up call to any employer who’s taking the human side of business for granted and neglecting the one and only true competitive advantage — the talent force.
If you don’t get your act together, you may soon find yourself planning both retirement parties and a going-out-of-business wake.
